Slot Sip - How to Install a SIP Module

Slot sip is a small to midsize business VOIP phone system. It includes one pre-installed 4-port VOIP SIP daughter board and 2 unlimited SIP trunks. If this equipment fails within 30 days, we’ll ground ship you a replacement for free!

The SIP (SSPA Interface Processor) is a circuit board that inserts into the chassis like a line card and provides network connectivity. It accepts up to four half-height and two full-height Cisco SPAs (SSCs). The SIP provides physical termination for router connectivity ranging from copper, channelized, POS, ATM, and Ethernet. A SIP and its installed SPAs are powered by the switch. You can control the status of a SIP by using the show module command in privileged EXEC mode. You can also view a list of the SPAs installed in the SIP.

Each SIP and SPA circuit board is mounted to a metal carrier that is sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Use the appropriate tools and techniques for installation, as described in Chapter 4, "Preparing to Install a SPA or SSC," to avoid ESD damage to the SIP.

Warning When installing a SIP or SSC, be sure to wear a grounding wrist strap and do not directly touch the midplane or backplane of the router with your hands or with any metal tool. This prevents ESD damage that can cause a loss of functionality or even damage the router.

Insert the SIP by aligning its edges between the upper and lower edges of the module slot, as shown in C of Figure 5-2. With the SPA seated, connect all cables to it. Insert the SIP ejector levers until the latches on them are affixed to the router backplane and you can hear a click.

Using excessive force to eject the SIP can cause the chassis to sustain damage. After the ejector latches are affixed, tighten the locking thumbscrews on both sides of the SIP to a torque of between 8.3 and 11 inch-pounds (94 to 124 N-cm).
